Our Programs
Community Health
The Reality
- Hispanics account for the largest percentage of uninsured population in the state and the county.
- 49% of the infants in Dallas County who died in 2004 were Hispanic.
- On average, about 2.5 million, or 9.5% of Hispanic and Latino Americans aged 20 years or older have been diagnosed with diabetes.
- Health issues are often exacerbated among Hispanics in the greater Dallas area due to language barriers, lack of financial resources and no health education or knowledge of the health system in this country.
If we do not address these problems the costs of community health care will continue to increase in the North Texas area.
Dallas Concilio: Bridging the Gap
Our goal is to focus on the obstacles to good health by:
- Providing physical activity and educational programs.
- Connecting Hispanics to affordable health resources.
- Consulting on disseminating information that is culturally and linguistically effective.
We have developed the following programs and services to target specific needs.
- Latino Initiative for Diabetes Education and Risk-Reduction (LIDER) 1994: This program directly addresses the Hispanic diabetes issue. Activities under this program include diabetes self-management classes called "Viviendo con la Diabetes" ("Living with Diabetes") and support groups.
- Pasos Saludables (Healthy Steps): A walking program promoting physical activity. Groups meet regularly at schools and other locations to walk together.
- Nutrition Course and Grocery Store Tours
- Referrals for Health Care
